The AIARE 1 is a 3 day/24 hour introduction to avalanche hazard management.
Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught).
A final debrief includes a knowledge quiz to test student comprehension and to give feedback to instructors on instructional tools. Students are encouraged and counseled on how to apply the skills learned and told that no course can fully guarantee safety, either during or after course completion. Familiarize yourself with these concepts so you can come to your course and build on your existing skills. By reading through this, you can perhaps answer some questions that you currently have as well as develop questions that you can have your instructor explain, either in the classroom or out in the field. Each of these topics will be addressed in-depth in your AIARE 1 course.
Student learning outcomes
At the end of the AIARE 1 course the student should be able to:

Recognize avalanche terrain.
Describe a basic framework for making decisions in avalanche terrain.
Learn and apply effective companion rescue.
Instructional sessions (24 hours including both class and field instruction) :
1. Introduction to the Avalanche Phenomena
Types and characteristics of avalanches
The mountain snowpack: an introduction to metamorphism and layering
2. Observations and Information Gathering
Field observation techniques
Snowpack tests: rutschblock, compression test
Avalanche danger factors or “Red Flags”
Avalanche danger scale
3. Trip Planning and Preparation
Avalanche terrain recognition, assessment, and selection
Route finding and travel techniques
Decision making and Human Factors
4. Companion Rescue and Equipment
Students must be able to travel in avalanche terrain. There are no other prerequisites.
Day one & two: Groups meet in Thayer Hall at AMC’s Highland Center in Crawford Notch at 8:30am. Click here for directions to the Highland Center. The first two days will be a mix of indoor and outdoor fieldwork so be prepared to spend part of the day outside. Depending on conditions and the make-up of the group we may be on skis for day 2. Each day will end around 4:30pm. You will be responsible for meals and transportation.
Day three: On this day your instructor will advise you where and when to meet but plan to be outdoors for the entire day. Today you will be traveling into the backcountry so have your skis/ board/ snowshoes prepped and ready the night before. Each day will wrap up around 4:30pm. You will be responsible for meals and transportation for the day.
Included/ Not Included
Students will be outfitted with all technical equipment for this course. You are welcome to bring your own equipment but it will be subject to approval by your guide. Equipment provided includes beacon, probe, shovel, AIARE Student Manual, AIARE Field Book. Students will be expected to arrive dressed appropriately for the weather. Payment is due in full at time of reservation to secure your reservation. Events run rain or shine. Eastern Mountain Sports Schools reserves the right to cancel or reschedule events for low participation, weather or safety concerns at any time. We will try to give as much advance notice as possible, but may not always be able to give much advance warning, especially for weather cancellations. Cancellations or schedule changes 8 days or more prior to the event start date will be fully refunded or credited with no penalty. Reservation changes of any kind within 7 days of the event start date will not be refunded and you will not be allowed to carry over deposits to future events.
