5 Reasons Why Bike Expo NY is Worth the Trip

Events / Ideas & Advice

New York City may be the last place that comes to mind when you think about cycling but this weekend, New York CIty becomes an absolute hub of cycling excitement, advocacy, and activity. While registration for all 30,000 Five Boro Bike Tour bibs sold out back in February, ANYONE can be a part of Bike Expo New York which happens from May 3-4 at Basketball City located at South and Montgomery on the east side of Manhattan. I was there last year and if you’re planning on being anywhere near New York City this Friday or Saturday, here are 5 reasons why you should stop on by.

Over 90 bike brands, organizations, and retailers are waiting to share their latest and greatest with you. Over the course of two days last year more than 43,000 people filed through creating an absolutely electric atmosphere that was all about cycling. My wife calls my spandex wearing, road biking die hard friends and co-workers, my “cult.” Well, if cycling is a cult, Bike Expo New York is our revival.

2) There’s all kinds of free stuff and awesome deals

At Bike Expo New York, you can try the latest energy bars, save big on beautiful bike jerseys and learn about some exciting programs to make cycling safer and more accessible in cities all over the world. It’s the best place to get stoked for the summer riding season.

3) There are lots of cool people there

Like I said before, more than 43,000 people and 90 brands showed up last year, including my good friends at Timbuk2 who ALWAYS bring something fun to the party. Last year it was the incredible bike ferris wheel that dazzled the crowd along with their energetic staff whose passion for cycling is without rival in my personal opinion. In  a world dominated by drivers who are less than thrilled about sharing the road, it’s just plain fun to be around so many people who love riding as much as you do.

4) It’s a cycling fashion show – literally

In addition to row after row of great looking cycling gear and apparel from your favorite brands, Bike Expo New York holds a fashion show featuring beautiful people in beautiful bike jerseys. There’s also fastest mechanic competitions, aerial displays outside, along with all kinds of cycling clinics and workshops.

We had such a great time at last year’s Bike Expo New York that we’ll be back again with a full cycling retail store and a crew of bike techs who will be offering free safety checks and basic repairs. At Eastern Mountain Sports, we know we’re primarily known for climbing, camping and paddling gear but we’re working hard to let the world know that we’re every bit as passionate about cycling. Our goal is to see more butts on bikes, less cars on the road and more ear-to-ear grins on road and dirt riders all over the country.

We hope you’ll come see us at Bike Expo New York but if you can’t make it, be sure to share your cycling photos with us on our Facebook page!
