Are You Ready? 5 Gifts for the Apocalypse

If you believe the Mayans, you are running out of time to get ready. Have you prepared? Are your friends ready too? With the help of my fellow coworker, Maribeth, we have complied various items to help you should you make it through the Apocalypse.

Maribeth’s top choice to be ready is to have lots of Superfeet on hand. With the apocalypse she expects most forms of modern transportation to be wiped out. With no cars, buses, trains, or planes everything will have to be human powered. This means you will be spending a lot of time on your feet. You might have to travel for miles and miles in search of food. Since you will have to depend so much on your feet it is important that they are comfortable.

Because who knows what you will have to trudge through on those long walks looking for food…..

Bug Netting

My top choice is bug netting. If cockroaches have been around for all of time who knows what other bugs might survive the apocalypse. Chances are if they survive they will also be mutant somehow. If you read or saw the Hunger Games you know what can happen to mutant bees. Protect yourself from dangerous insects by sleeping in bug netting. You might also want to get some netting to protect your head and face on those food searches.

NOLS Wilderness Books

These three books will be very important should you make it through. First up there is Wilderness Medicine. Unless you are a doctor, PA, or nurse chances are you will need some reference materials in case something happens to you or your fellow survivors. The book has more than 75 illustrations showing signs, treatment, prevention, and anatomy to help you through. Next up is Wilderness Navigation. You’re going to have to go looking for food so you better be able to figure out how to get around. Once you get that food I certainly hope you know how to cook it. The Cookery book can help you with your backcountry cooking.

Freeze Dried Meals

Stock pile up on the freeze dried food now while you can still get them. I would hit up the Backpacker’s Pantry desserts such as Apple Cobbler, Mocha Mousse Pie, Chocolate Cheesecake, and Chocolate S’mores. These sweet treats will brighten up your day in a post-apocalyptic world.

Make sure you have a good Leatherman or Swiss Army multi tool. If you are constantly on the move you want something small and easy to take a long with you. You should plan on having to cut or dig for some of your food.

Water Filtration

Who knows what will end up in the water. Staying hydrated is going to be key for your survival.

Backpacking Backpack

One last thing that Maribeth wants to make sure you have, a large backpack. If you are going to be a nomad wandering around from place to place looking for food you will need a large bag to carry all of your worldy positions.

So, Maribeth and I have come up with more than 5 gifts, but then again we also plan on being around come December 22. But, you never know when the zombie apocalypse is coming….

Amy Parulis

A former Strength and Conditioning Specialist and captain of the University of North Carolina track team, Amy now looks for her next mountain to climb or mud run to take part in to keep in shape. Her favorite hike was to the crater rim of Mt. St. Helens where she witnessed a steaming lava dome and she some day hopes to summit Mt. Rainier. In the meantime she can be found helping customers at the Waterford EMS. You can follow her adventures on Twitter @amyparulis
