Respect the sun year-round

Respect the sun year-round

Nothing ruins a great day outside like a nasty case of sunburn.  I don’t know about you, but I almost never burn in the summer time because by the the time June or July rolls around, I’m so conditioned to lathering up my lily white skin with SPF30+ that it’s second nature, especially when you’re sweating as soon as you leave the house.

While wind burn caused my red face in this photo, it's a miracle I didn't get a sunburn as well on this ride to work last May with my friend Karen.

The sunburn danger zones for me are mid-winter when I’m more concerned about protecting my skin from wind and cold than too much sun and early spring when I’m so excited to feel those first warming rays of the season that I completely forget to break out the sunscreen. The bottom line is, the sun is ALWAYS a force to reckon with and when it comes to skin cancer, I’m inclined to believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a few tons of cure.

We’ve got some great information about your personal risk for sunburn and advice on how to choose the right sunscreen for you on ems.com, but here are  a few sun protection products I consider to be among my most essential outdoor gear and recommend with confidence.

Dermatone 45

That’s right, Dermatone SPF 45. Unfortunately for me, I did not inherit my Scottish immigrant grand parents’ awesome accents but I did inherit their fish belly white skin. As an added bonus, like my father and grandfather before me, I also have what my co-worker Mike McCooey likes to call “gorilla arms.” One of the perils of being a macho (hairy) guy like me is that white sunscreen doesn’t absorb instantly into my arm hair leaving me looking like a greasy powdered donut. Not so with Dermatone which goes on clear. I like that. I look silly enough in my bike shorts, and cycling jersey. There’s no need for me to be a further eyesore on by road bike.

All Terrain Acqua Sport 30

Look closely at the photo and you’ll see that Acquasport from All Terrain touts itself as “no slip” which is a very good thing. I like it a lot so I can keep a firm grip on my kayaking paddle but 45 always goes on my freckle face, ears and the back of my neck. Side note – All Terrain also makes a fantastic after sport rub that really does the job on sore muscles.

Dermatone Lip and Face Protector

I can’t stress enough how important it is to protect your lips from the sun all year round. I like this Dermatone product because it works and because it solves the single biggest obstacle to sun protection, remembering to bring your sunscreen with you. Clip a Dermatone to all your packs and you’ll never forget your lip protection again.

What’s the worst case of sunburn you’ve ever gotten and what sunscreen works for you? Leave me a comment and keep respecting the sun!
