Staff Spotlight: Nashua, NH

Eastern Mountain Sports has had a presence in Nashua, New Hampshire for years but in March 2013 it will be the site of our newest store. Located less than a mile from its current location on Daniel Webster Highway, this bigger, better location in the former Borders Books and Music space will be nearly three times the size of our current space. As I write this, our crews are hard at work packing the 22,204 square foot space with a larger selection of kayaks and stand up paddle boards, more camping gear, more climbing gear and a bigger full-service bike shop.

As with our 67 other locations, the best feature of our new Nashua store will be our outstanding staff who are all active participants in our sports and have the first-hand knowledge and expertise to recommend the right gear for your unique requirements. Whether you live in Nashua or are just passing through on your way to the Whites, Tom Carlson and his team hope you’ll stop by the grand opening bash set for April 12-14.

Tom Carlson – Store Manager

The son of a NH Fish and Game Officer, Tom grew up with an appreciation and respect for the outdoors.  Prior to becoming the manager of our Salem, NH store in 1998, Tom managed a record store and has been the leader of our Nashua location for the past six years.  He loves rock and ice climbing, backpacking, listening to music, good beer, and dragging his son away from his video games to go outside.  His climbing and hiking has taken him to Yosemite, Rainier, the Tetons, Canadian Rockies, and Zion among others and he looks forward to sharing his knowledge and experience with more room for gear.

Les Scontsas – Assistant Store Manager

An 8-year veteran of the Nashua store, Les began as a part time guide at the Pheasant Lane Mall location. When he is not at the store, you’ll find Les and his wife Lisa downhill skiing, kayaking together and whenever possible, hiking with their two Airdale Terriers.

Cameron Berube – Floor Supervisor
From operating a zip line in the White Mountains to putting out forest fires in Oregon, and teaching adventure education programs in Hong Kong, Cameron has had a lot of great adventures during his 7 years of working in the outdoor industry. Prior to joining EMS in November, he spent the majority of the last few years traveling in South East
Asia, studying Chinese and “eating all sorts of crazy and delicious things.” Some of Cameron’s favorite ways to spend time are: skiing, canoeing, and backpacking. All in all, he’s passionate about having a good time, and just loves being outside.

Dave April – Store Guide

If you’ve got a question, it’s a pretty safe bet that Dave has an answer. A full time in the local school systems for over 30 years and part-time guide in our former Nashua locations for over 22 years, Dave loves sharing his knowledge of outdoor gear from EMS past as well as what’s on the racks. A lifetime backpacker and camper, Dave has been working with local Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops as long as he’s been teaching and has led scout trips to wilderness destinations all over the country. Dave also enjoys canoeing, kayaking, rock and ice climbing, as well as using map, compass, and GPS to find his way around.

Tim Porofsky – Floor Supervisor

In the two years Tim has worked at EMS, he has spent time in our Harvard Square store outfitting city dwellers for backcountry adventures as well as our Peterborough store where he enjoyed meeting all the people behind the scenes. In  Nashua, he feels he’s found the perfect mix of urban and suburban and loves telling people about how much fun they can have without cell-phone service.

Julia Cassidy – Foot Guru

One of our most well-rounded employees anywhere, Julia is a Wilderness First Responder who loves hiking, rock climbing, camping and jamming with New Hampshire Roller Derby. Julia was a girl scout for 12 years, a camp counselor for five and went to college in Utah where she studied Wilderness Therapy.

Joe Ruston – Bike Tech
During Joe’s 5 years with Eastern Mountain Sports, he’s held a several different positions before finding his niche as our Nashua store’s lead tech. He has a passion for all kinds of two-wheeled activity including mountain biking, road cycling, cyclocross, and extended touring so no matter what type of service or repair you ride requires, Joe understands what you need. His other favorite outdoor pursuits include paddling, trail running, backpacking, and “pretty much anything else that beats up on my cardio.”
Jared Levesque – Shipper/Receiver

Before joining the store staff five years ago, Nashua native Jared managed managed an indoor climbing wall, and was an EMT. He attended the University of Vermont where he was a trip leader for the outing club and indulged his love for alpine skiing, hiking, backpacking and many other outdoor activities.

Jim Darroch

Jim's love for the outdoors began with family camping trips in "Brady Bunch" style canvas tents and progressed to backpacking adventures with the Boy Scouts. In 2007, he fulfilled his teenage dream by joining Eastern Mountain Sports as Brand Communications Manager. When he's not in the office, you'll find Jim kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking around the Monadnock Region and throughout New England with his wife Brenda and his dog Brewski.
