Take Your Workout Outside

Gear / Ideas & Advice

It’s one of the first and most repeated instructions we get from our parents: “Go Outside and Play!” Alas, as we get older and our list of responsibilities grows, the harder it gets to set aside the time to have fun outside. When it comes to staying fit, the gym is an easy one-stop shop for getting in, working out and getting back on task with our hectic lives and busy schedules. It doesn’t have to be this way, and as this beautiful video from Merrell illustrates, it SHOULDN’T be this way.

The video puts uses a split screen effect to compare a typical tread mill workout with outdoor running. The message is clear. No matter where you live and what you do for a living, you can ALWAYS take your workout outside. And with the sun shining and morning temperatures in the seventies throughout the northeast and around the country, right now is the perfect time to get off the treadmill and pound the pavement, the track or the trail.

At Eastern Mountain Sports, we’re always looking for ways to inspire people to have more fun outside. When you can combine the exercise you need to be healthy in the fresh air and sunshine, you really maximize the effectiveness of your workout. Fresh air is a beautiful thing and the diversity of scenery, conditions and terrain outside the gym will keep you challenged and motivated in ways a treadmill just can’t.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate the value of treadmills, or stationary bikes, or elliptical machines for that matter. I use them all regularly during the winter months where darkness, snow and ice conspire to keep me off my road bike. I just think that when the weather is good, we owe it to our minds as well as our bodies to spend as much time outside as we possibly can.

I should add that Merrell made this beautiful video to introduce their M-Connect line of minimalist footwear  with greater support for people who like their running shoes to be as light as possible, without sacrificing the shock absorbing qualities of constructed footwear. M-Connect gives runners the the best of both worlds so you can run everywhere from the world outside your front door to the White Mountains and anywhere else you choose to take your workout outside.

And as you can see by the photo above, the Merrell’s M-Connect line is as stylish as it is functional. To learn more about this exciting new product line from Merrell, please CLICK HERE.
