What Would YOU Do With a Night at the Mount Washington Observatory?
For the past three years, Eastern Mountain Sports has been the official outfitter of the intrepid staff that measures, records and analyzes the “World’s Worst Weather” at the top of Mount Washington. Since 1932, the Mount Washington Observatory has kept an uninterrupted watch of one of the most fascinating places on the planet. Located at the confluence of three major storm tracks, Mount Washington has recorded some of the most powerful winds and coldest temperatures in world history at a height of just 6,288 in the heart of New England.
It’s a fascinating place to visit but only a select few people each year have the opportunity to stay past dark. Which is why the contest we have running on our Facebook page with Vasque Footwear through November 3, 2013 is so awesome. One lucky person and a guest will win the Ultimate New England Weather Experience. This sweet prize package incudes a night at the elegant and historic Omni Mount Washington Hotel, a snowcat ride to the Mount Washington Observatory and an overnight stay at the most famous weather station on earth! The lucky winner will also receive two pairs of Vasque insulated boots (the same boots worn by the staff of the Mount Washington Observatory), two pairs of Darn Tough Socks and two Mountainsmith daypacks!
This $3,000 prize package includes air transportation (if necessary) and ground transportation along with dinner and breakfast at the Mount Washington Hotel and all meals at the observatory.
Entering the contest is easy as CLICKING HERE and adding a comment telling us the first thing you’d do when you get to the Mount Washington Observatory. The person with the most creative/compelling answer as chosen by a panel of experts from Eastern Mountain Sports and the Mount Washington Observatory will be the winner.
The possibilities are unlimited but here are a few of our favorite activities as submitted by the Mount Washington Observatory staff:
Do a Snow Angel
The first coating of rime ice of the fall was observed on October 8 so chances are, the winner’s visit on December 14 will feature PLENTY of opportunities to do real snow angels on the observation deck.
Rub Marty the Cat’s Belly (or at least TRY to)
The only year-round resident is a fluffy black cat named Marty. Among the hundreds of observatory visitors and volunteers Marty has unfairly earned a reputation for being somewhat aloof and anti-social. While he does indeed tend to keep his distance, the observers are quick to tell you that he is a love bug at heart who has learned to share his affections only with the regular crew. Roughly translated, the poor kitty doesn’t want to get too attached to folks who don’t visit more than a few hours!
Reflect On How Lucky You Are
If the extreme weather doesn’t dazzle you, the indescribable feeling of seeing firsthand the stunning sunsets that the rest of the world wlll only see in photographs will definitely give you something to think about.
Track the Stars
OK, so maybe you don’t have the tools or the patience to construct a single image from 1,000 stacked still photos but you’ll be spending time with people who do. Just imagine the conversations you’ll have around the dinner table!
The Mount Washington Observatory is a hotspot for weather reporters and documentary filmmakers alike but there’s ALWAYS room for fresh perspectives and in-depth reports on the fascinating work that happens there around the clock in all kinds of weather.
SO, what would be the first thing YOU’D do when you got to the Mount Washington Observatory? Leave a comment in the photo below on our Facebook page and you just might get the chance to make it happen!
